Rummy has a small set of rules and a long set of conventions. The rules are the rules. The conventions are how experienced players read the rules — when to draw from the closed deck, when to pick the discard, when to declare early, and when a middling hand beats a long one. This guide covers both.
A rummy hand resolves into three kinds of group. A pure sequence, an impure sequence and a set. Each is built from a 52-card deck plus jokers; each scores zero in a clean declaration; each fails in a different way when you get it wrong.

Points, Deals and Pool differ less in their rules than in their time commitment. Pick the format that matches how long you actually want to sit at the table.
One round, fixed stake. Best for a ten-minute study break or a single late-night session. Score is recorded in points; the winner is the player with the lowest total.
Fixed hands — usually five or ten. Each hand is a closed round with its own stake. Players settle at the end of the deal. Good for an evening of matched sessions.
Table-wide stake, elimination play. Players drop out as their score climbs; the last player standing takes the pool. Long format — set aside a real hour.
Six steps that every rummy hand walks through. Each step has a decision node — draw or pass, hold or drop, declare or fold. The annotations show what an experienced player is thinking at each node.
Thirteen cards are dealt face down to each of two to six players. One card is placed face up to start the discard pile; the rest form the closed deck.
Group cards by suit and look for obvious sequences or sets. You cannot meld on this turn, but the sort tells you what your hand is closest to.
Pick one card from the closed deck or the discard pile. Closed deck is safer; discard is faster when you need a specific rank to complete a sequence.
Lay down at least one valid group. A pure sequence comes out first; impure sequences and sets follow as they form.
End your turn by discarding one card. The card you discard tells opponents what you are no longer chasing — read their discards carefully.
Show the full hand: one pure sequence, all remaining cards in valid melds, and the card on top of the discard pile. Last-card declaration earns a bonus.
Numeric cards carry face value; face cards carry ten; aces carry one. Jokers carry zero when used in a meld, full value when left unmatched. Three worked examples follow.

Rummy is classified as a game of skill in most jurisdictions that regulate it, including India. That classification rests on a real distinction. The opening deal is random.
